Photo credit Erik Christensen, CC BY-SA 3.0. In the 1830s a farmer in Sundeved dug some old swords and shield fittings out of the wet ground behind his fields and gave them to his children as toys. He had no particular reason to think otherwise. The bog had always thrown up scraps of metal. What lay under it was one of the richest war-booty sacrifices ever found in northern Europe — thousands of weapons deliberately ruined, and three boats, one of them the oldest large rowing vessel known from the region.
