Everything the Amazon delivers to the Atlantic is counted here. Eight hundred kilometres upstream from the ocean, past the last reach the tides can touch, the largest river on Earth is squeezed between two shoulders of hard ground into a channel barely a mile and a half wide. Brazilians call the place the Garganta do Amazonas - the throat of the Amazon. It is the narrowest point on the lower river and also the deepest, dropping to something like a hundred metres, with currents that can run past four metres a second. That combination of geometry is rare enough to be useful: this is the only spot downstream where the entire discharge of the Amazon can be measured in a single crossing. So hydrologists set their gauge here, on a bend below a hillside town of some fifty-two thousand people, and the number the world quotes for the Amazon's flow is, in the end, a number taken at Óbidos.
