Object 100: Introduction

Somewhere in the mountains above Balaklava, the rock itself was hollowed out to hold missiles. Codenamed Object 100, this Soviet coastal-defense complex was built in 1954 not as a fortress you could see but as one you could not: launch sites, command posts, and magazines buried under layers of concrete thick enough, its designers hoped, to survive a nuclear attack. Its job was to guard Sevastopol and the sea approaches around it, to make any hostile fleet think twice about the waters off southwestern Crimea. For decades it did so from underground, invisible until the moment its launchers rose from the hillside to fire.
