Stand on the cape at Ochakiv and look south across the water, and you are looking at a doorway. Only 3.6 kilometers separate this northern headland from the low sandy spit of Kinburn on the far shore, and through that gap flow the combined waters of the Dnieper and the Southern Bug, two of the largest rivers in Europe, emptying at last into the Black Sea. Whoever held both banks of this strait held the key to everything upstream. For more than two thousand years, that fact has drawn Greeks, Romans, Tatars, Ottomans, Cossacks, and empires to this single windblown point of land, and it has made a small fishing town one of the most fought-over places on the northern Black Sea.
