Vanhalinna translates as old castle, and people were calling it old in the Middle Ages, while the real stone fortress downriver at Turku was still going up. Nothing on this hill matches the postcard version of a castle. There is no curtain wall, no keep, no drawbridge across a moat. What Lieto has is a rock rising fifty-five metres above the sea, with the Aura River curling past one flank and Finland's most storied overland route running past the other. For something close to two thousand years, that combination was reason enough to climb up here and dig in.]]></description>
