The river beside it is the same one that flooded Cockermouth in November 2009 and quietly eroded its foundations in November 2021. Built in the early nineteenth century to replace a dilapidated moot hall, the courthouse has by now spent nearly as long as a ruin-in-waiting as it once spent as a centre of civic life.
