There is a lake near the middle of Đồng Hới called Bàu Tró, and the ground around it has been giving up stone tools and potsherds for a century. Human settlement here runs back some five thousand years. Walk out from the lake in any direction, though, and almost nothing you see above ground predates 1975. That gap — deep past, then a hard edit, then everything at once — is the shape of this city. Đồng Hới has been rebuilt so thoroughly that its oldest visible structure is a gate leading nowhere.]]></description>
