All around its base lie scattered boulders, and for as long as anyone can remember the people of this coast have looked at those stones and seen a flock of sheep turned to rock mid-graze. They call the place the petrified herd. The cliff stands 263 meters above the sea in southeastern Crimea, in a valley between the towns of Koktebel and Otuzy, just north of the black volcano Kara Dag, and its Crimean Tatar name has been read two ways, as the grassy rock and as the fire rock. Both names suit a place where the ordinary and the strange sit side by side.
