The arbutus stops here. That crooked, sun-loving tree with the peeling copper bark grows the length of Vancouver Island's dry southeastern shoulder, leaning out over saltwater, shedding its skin in papery curls - and at Otter Point it reaches its western limit and goes no farther. Keep driving west on Highway 14 and the forest closes in, the rain deepens, the coastline turns serious. Otter Point sits on that seam. It is not a town. There is no traffic light, no grocery store, no main street to speak of. What there is instead: a crescent of road, a scatter of hobby farms, two lakes, several hundred people who chose distance over convenience, and a great deal of working forest.
