A parish of fewer than three thousand people, on a coast most Finns have never had a reason to visit, built a stage at its harbour and staged an opera about a scatter of bare rocks lying offshore. The Ouraooppera premiered at Krookka in Merikarvia in 2002, performed by amateurs, and ran four consecutive summers. It was written by Arvo Salo, who was born in Merikarvia and would die there, and who by then had a national reputation and no obvious need to write anything at all. The subject he chose in his seventieth year was the Oura archipelago: more than three hundred islands and skerries, most of them treeless, set in a rough ring in the Bothnian Sea a few kilometres from where he grew up.
