Photo credit Daniel Marzian, CC BY-SA 4.0. By night, the great sandstone cathedral of La Seu floats above the Bay of Palma, floodlit and enormous, its buttresses glowing gold over dark water. Directly below, along the marina, nightclubs thump until dawn. Palma holds both at once: an ancient capital and a summer playground, a city of quiet courtyards a few streets from a coastline of boxy resort hotels. It is the chief city of Mallorca and the capital of the entire Balearic Islands, home to some 423,000 people, roughly half of everyone on the island, and in high summer it can feel like it holds half of Europe too.
