Fogo selvagem - wild fire - is the Brazilian name for an endemic form of pemphigus, an autoimmune disease that raises blisters across the skin and, before modern treatment, frequently killed. In the 1920s a man named Dorcelino Damasio da Silva had it. In the cerrado of southeast Goias, a group of his neighbors watched him recover, and what they believed they had witnessed rearranged the map. On February 9, 1929, eighteen of them founded a Spiritist center on open ranchland and named it Luz da Verdade, the Light of Truth. There was no town yet. The town came afterward, growing outward from the building the way villages elsewhere grow outward from a mill or a river crossing.]]></description>
