It does this every day of the year at one of Brazil's largest gold operations — and it does it a few minutes' walk from a colonial street plan that the country declared national heritage in 2010. Some 94,000 people live in northwestern Minas Gerais between those two facts, in a city whose entire existence has been organized, for three centuries, around getting metal out of the ground.
