The mountain looks exactly like a bear stooping to drink from the sea. Turkish speakers called it Ayu-Dağ, Bear Mountain, and the resemblance is so plain that once you see it you cannot unsee it. At its foot, on a rare flat shelf of Crimean coast before the land tilts steeply upward, sits Partenit, a small seaside town that has been changing hands and names for well over a thousand years while the bear has simply gone on drinking.
