Stand at the lip of the gorge at Paulo Afonso in a normal dry season and you are looking at bare rock and no water to speak of. Then, in a wet year, the operators open four controlled spillways set into the face of the falls, the São Francisco comes over the edge again, and for as long as the gates stay up the cataract is exactly what it always was. This is the deal the Brazilian Northeast made in the twentieth century: the most spectacular natural feature in the region, traded for the electricity that lit it.]]></description>
