One reading takes it from the Tupi para'nã and buka — sea and hole — pointing to a gap in the reef between Olinda and Recife. Another says pernambuco was simply what the local peoples called brazilwood, the dye tree that first drew European ships. A third proposes paranãbuku, long river. A fourth, from the academic Jacques Ribemboim, argues the whole thing is a Portuguese phrase run backwards: Boca de Fernão, reversed and slurred into Pernambuka. Four hypotheses, no verdict. It is a fitting start for a state that has spent five centuries refusing to be settled on.
