      <description><![CDATA[Stand on the northern beaches of Phú Quốc and the land across the water is Cambodia — fifteen kilometres away, close enough to read the shape of the hills. The Vietnamese mainland lies forty-five kilometres in the other direction, out of sight. By every intuition of geography this island ought to be Cambodian. It is Vietnamese because in 1939 a French governor-general drew an administrative line across the Gulf of Thailand and put Phú Quốc on the far side of it, and because a line drawn for colonial convenience hardened, over the following seventy years, into an international border.]]></description>
