When Cistercian monks arrived in the twelfth century, they settled in a hollow of orchards ringed by white poplars, hortus populeti in Latin, 'the poplar garden,' and over the centuries that phrase wore down to a single word: Poblet. The monastery they built would become the burial place of the kings and queens of Aragon. The woods around it would grow into one of the best-preserved wild forests in Catalonia. Today the two cannot be separated, and the natural park that protects them both still carries the forest's old name.]]></description>
