On the evening of 13 October 1872, in the dining room of the Hotel Otava in Pori, a touring company put on a play in Finnish. It sounds like nothing. It was not nothing: Finnish had only been granted legal standing equal to Swedish nine years earlier, the educated classes still conducted their cultural life in Swedish, and a theatre performing in the language of the countryside was a political act as much as an artistic one. The company was the Finnish Theatre, run by the siblings Kaarlo and Emilie Bergbom. It would eventually become the Finnish National Theatre in Helsinki. But it started here, in a hotel in a timber port on the Gulf of Bothnia, and Pori has never quite let anyone forget it.
