In 1865 Jose de Alencar, a novelist from Ceara, published Iracema - the story of a Tabajara maiden, the Portuguese soldier Martim who was allied with her people's rivals the Pitiguara, and their son Moacir, who was meant to stand for the whole mixed nation being invented on this coast. The heroine's name is an anagram of America; Alencar glossed it as honey-lips. In 1930 Fortaleza held a contest to give its fish beach a better name, and the fiction won. What the city got was a stretch of sand that has since been a working port, an American servicemen's playground, a bohemian quarter, and finally a shoreline the ocean took back.]]></description>
