For most of the twentieth century, if you rode the Estrada de Ferro Sorocabana west out of São Paulo and stayed on until the conductor stopped calling stations, you ended up at Presidente Epitácio, standing on a bank of the Paraná River with Mato Grosso do Sul on the far side and nowhere left to go by train. The station opened on May 1, 1922, and it was designed as an ending — the terminus of a line that had spent decades pushing into land the state had barely mapped. The last passenger train pulled out on January 16, 1999. Within months, something even stranger happened to the town: the river itself changed shape.
