In 1508 a churchman named Giovanni Angelo Arcimboldi, later Archbishop of Milan, found books one to six of Tacitus's Annals in the library of a Benedictine abbey on the Weser. Nobody in the Latin West had read them for something like a thousand years. They survive because of that one copy at Corvey, and among what they contain is the only sustained account of the Roman army going back into the German forests six years after the Varus disaster to bury what was left of three legions - a battlefield that lay a little over a hundred kilometres from the reading desk where the manuscript had been sitting all along.
