In 1024, a prince named Mstislav did something almost unheard of in his violent world: instead of fighting his brother to the death for supremacy, he sat down and drew a line on a map. The line ran along the Dnieper River, and to the east of it he built one of the largest and most powerful states within Kievan Rus'. For a time it answered to no one but Kyiv itself, and often not even to Kyiv. This was the Principality of Chernigov, and its capital on the Desna would remain a great centre of Rus' culture and power for centuries.]]></description>
