Pursat: Introduction

Photo credit n ole, CC BY 2.0. Travel writers have been unkind to Pursat. The standard verdict is that it is indistinguishable from Cambodia's other small provincial capitals, a sleepy town of marginal interest, useful mainly as a place to break a journey. Five kilometres northwest of that supposedly interchangeable town stands the sanctuary of Khleang Moeung, a sixteenth-century general who - the story goes - killed himself by leaping into a pit of poisoned swords so that his spirit could raise an army the living could not. Once a year, on a Saturday in the lunar month of bisakh, Cambodians come here to honour him and everyone who has died for the country in the five centuries since. About 58,000 people live in Pursat, on the river of the same name, in Sampov Meas District. Sleepy is not the same as ordinary.
