Say it aloud and it sounds like a sneeze, or a word invented to win at Scrabble. Pysht comes from the Klallam language - pəšc̕t, a word that may carry the sense of against the wind, or against the current - and the people who gave it to this stretch of shoreline were living at the river's mouth long before anyone tried to spell it in Roman letters. Drive State Route 112 today and you could miss the place entirely: a bend in the road, a river sliding out into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, trees on every side. A century ago, five hundred people lived here. They had a hospital, a movie hall, an electric plant, and a company store, and every plank of it belonged to a lumber firm headquartered two thousand miles away in Michigan.
