Quillehuyte County, Washington: Introduction

A mapmaker in 1877 inked a county onto the far northwest corner of Washington Territory and labeled it "Quillimute." The county had been dead for eight years. Quillehuyte County was created by the Territorial Legislature on January 29, 1868, out of the western half of Jefferson County and a slice of Clallam, and it was gone by 1869 — never organized, never governed, never home to a courthouse or a sheriff or a single recorded county election. Along with Ferguson County, it is one of only two counties the territory ever dissolved outright. What it left behind is a shape on old paper and a name the legislature borrowed from people it was trying to move.
