Trains had priority; vessels waited, and half an hour went out of a captain's day for the sake of one locomotive. On a canal too narrow for overtaking, the delay rippled outward until the whole waterway congealed, and the navy — whose flotillas could lose hours to a closed swing bridge — wanted it fixed. What Rendsburg got was not a modest fix. It got 2,486 metres of riveted steel lifting the railway 42 metres above the water, a spiral of track wrapped around the town to reach it, and, slung beneath the main span almost as an afterthought, a ferry that hangs in the air.
