Requena is officially part of Valencia province, yet walk its streets and you will hear Castilian Spanish, not the Valencian spoken just a few valleys east. The reason lies buried in six centuries of border politics: after Christian armies took the town in the thirteenth century, it was handed not to the Kingdom of Valencia but to Castile, where it stayed until the middle of the 1800s. Language is the fingerprint that history leaves behind, and in Requena the fingerprint is unmistakable - a Valencian town that still, in its speech, belongs to somewhere else.]]></description>
