The water surfacing at Rio Quente arrives at around 37 degrees Celsius — close enough to blood heat that floating in it feels less like swimming than like being held — and it does so in the flat middle of the Goiás cerrado, nowhere near anything molten. The mechanism is patient rather than dramatic: rain soaks into the plateau, works down through faulted and fractured rock to something like a kilometre of depth, warms against the earth's own heat, and finds its way back up through the same fractures. What comes out the other end is a river you can lie down in.
