Fifty thousand years ago, small bands of Neanderthals climbed to a ledge above the Segre river and watched for movement below. From this rock, which Catalans now call Roca dels Bous, the Bull's Rock, they could see the valley that funneled herds of horses, wild asses, and deer between the lowlands of the Ebro and the high Pyrenees. They did not live here permanently. The scarcity of tools and animal bones, and the absence of thick, repeated hearths, tells archaeologists this was a temporary shelter, a hunting camp used again and again by people tracking their prey through the seasons. What they left behind is now one of the most closely studied windows into the last Neanderthals in Europe.
