Inside the gates of Rodrigues Alves Park, roughly 94 percent of the vegetation is native forest - Amazon growth that was standing here before Belém's suburbs reached the old Marco da Légua road in the 1950s and closed around it. Fifteen hectares of the original coastal forest, hemmed in by traffic, still doing what forest does. The city grew up to the fence and stopped.
