Rudolf Virchow: Introduction

Photo credit Félix Potin company (1908), Public domain. In the 1880s Rudolf Virchow organised the collection of a strange kind of data. Across every German state but one, teachers recorded the hair, skin and eye colour of the children in front of them - roughly 6,760,000 of them, with separate records kept for about 75,000 Jewish pupils. It was, at the time, one of the largest surveys ever attempted of anything. Virchow published the results in 1886, and they were not what the emerging race theorists wanted. Fewer than a third of German children were blond. Just over half were mixed types. Among Jewish children, eleven per cent were blond. His conclusion was that there were no pure races in Germany - neither a Jewish one nor a German one. He was seventy-five when he said so, and he was still saying it when he died.
