The building has not held a regular class in decades, and people still come to stand in it. They arrive in Sacramento — a municipality of about 26,000 in western Minas Gerais, three hours off the main road from anywhere — to see a schoolhouse founded in 1907 by a local man named Eurípedes Barsanulfo, who taught there for eleven years and then died at thirty-eight. To much of Brazil the place is simply a footnote in the history of education. To the country's several million Spiritists, it is something closer to a source.
