Somerled — the Norse-Gaelic warlord who had broken Norway's hold on the western isles and made himself ruler of a kingdom stretching from Kintyre to the Hebrides — established the Cistercian monastery here in 1160. Four years later, he was killed. His son Ragnall completed what his father had begun. The choice of site is worth standing in to understand: a bluff on the east coast of Kintyre, where two streams join — Saddell Water and Allt nam Manach, the Water of the Monks. The abbey's walls have been weathered down to fragments. The dead, carved in life-sized stone, still lie under their shelter beside the ruins.]]></description>
