Saky Air Base: Introduction

Photo credit Tschubby, CC BY-SA 3.0. In February 1945, an American president in a wheelchair was carried down from a converted transport plane onto a windswept Crimean airfield. Franklin Roosevelt had flown across an ocean and a war to reach Saky, where Winston Churchill's aircraft touched down beside his own. From this strip of runway near the Black Sea, the two Western leaders drove inland to Yalta to redraw the map of a shattered continent. The airfield they landed on had been carved from the steppe only a decade earlier, and it would spend the rest of the century watching history arrive by air.
