Salt gave the town its name. Around 1698 an explorer named Antônio Luís dos Passos found rich deposits of sal-gema — rock salt — along a river in the dry northeast of Minas Gerais, and the river, then the settlement beside it, became Salinas. Nobody comes for the salt now. They come for the other thing this ground produces, and for a title the town holds not by boast but by act of the National Congress. Under federal law nº 13.773, signed on 19 December 2018, Salinas is the Capital Nacional da Cachaça: the national capital of Brazil's national spirit.
