In the remote lowlands of eighteenth-century Bolivia, he raised sanctuaries and taught Chiquitano musicians to play violins and sing baroque polyphony, so that the same hands shaping the beams of a church might also draw a bow across strings inside it. San Rafael was one of at least three missions he built, and it stands today as a baroque jewel reached by a dirt road, its altar still catching the light in pink mica.]]></description>
