Sankt Peter-Ording: Introduction

Photo credit Bened7, CC BY-SA 3.0. Sankt Peter-Ording failed at everything a North Sea village is supposed to do. No harbour could be built here, because the sand refused to hold a channel open; without a harbour there was no fishing fleet. Farming was a running argument with salt, since the fields flooded and silted and soured. The dunes behind the village walked inland at their own pace, and twice the congregation at Ording shovelled its way to church for years before giving up and abandoning the building to the sand. Then, in 1877, somebody built a hotel. Everything that had made this an impossible place to earn a living turned out to be exactly what the nineteenth century wanted from a coastline.
