In March 2003, walking the flat grasslands near Santa Vitória do Palmar, in the far southern tip of Rio Grande do Sul, he kept his eyes down, scanning for the chipped stone tools the region's earliest peoples had left behind. He found three dark stones instead. They were heavier than they should have been, crusted in something black and pitted, and they did not belong to this world at all. What Maciel had gathered, while hunting for human history, was a fragment of the solar system's beginning, a piece of rock older than the planet under his boots.]]></description>
