Photo credit Rafael Vianna Croffi from São Paulo, Brazil, CC BY 2.0. The story the village is named for begins with a fisherman pulling something heavy out of the water. What came up was a piece of carved wood, so thickly grown over with seaweed that it took cleaning before anyone could see it was an image of São Miguel Arcanjo - Saint Michael the Archangel. By the time the fisherman had finished cleaning it, according to the account that has been passed down here, a wound that had troubled him for a long time had closed completely. Word travelled. People came looking for miracles, and the settlement took the name it still carries: São Miguel of the Miracles. Fewer than nine thousand people live here now, on a stretch of Alagoas coast that has stayed almost improbably quiet.
