The wheel turns the great timber gears inside Sarehole Mill, and the millstones, four feet across and weighing a tonne, grind English wheat into flour the way English wheat has been ground here since 1542. The boy who watched this happen between 1896 and 1900 was named Ronald Tolkien. He was four when he arrived in the neighbouring Gracewell Cottages with his widowed mother, and the place worked on him. When he wrote The Lord of the Rings half a century later, the Mill at Hobbiton was Sarehole. Not inspired by, not based on. The same mill, rebuilt in prose.]]></description>
