In the spring of 1964, the Vancouver Public Aquarium wanted a dead killer whale. The plan was straightforward by the standards of the day: commission a sculptor to harpoon one, then use the carcass as a model for a display. On 20 May, at East Point on Saturna Island, the harpoon struck — and the whale did not die. What happened next undid a century of assumptions. Taken back to Vancouver and named Moby Doll, the animal lived about three months, through the summer of 1964, and in that time researchers listened to a living orca for the first time. They discovered the rapid pulses of clicks it used to see with sound, and they examined a brain with an enormous auditory nerve. The whale that had been shot as a raw material for a statue turned out to be intelligent, communicative, and not remotely the monster the harpoon implied.
