The name is a description of a food supply. In Klallam, Beecher Bay is xʷčiyánəxʷ -- built from xʷ-, meaning location, and the root for salmon -- and it is usually rendered in English as the place of the big fish. The Saanich dialect of Northern Straits borrowed the Klallam word and made it W̱ĆIYÁNEW̱, which English-speaking clerks eventually flattened into Scia'new. Four different ancestral languages are recognized by the community here, and not all of them are still spoken aloud. But the oldest name on this bay has survived every spelling inflicted on it, and it still means the same thing: come here, there are fish.
