Photo credit Smash the Iron Cage, CC BY-SA 4.0. Scott County sits in the far southwestern corner of Virginia, pressed against the Tennessee state line and the Cumberland Mountains. The 2020 census counted 21,576 people scattered across 539 square miles of ridges and hollows. The county was carved out of Washington, Lee, and Russell on November 24, 1814, by an act of the General Assembly, and named for General Winfield Scott - Virginia-born, Mexican War commander, eventual hero of three wars. Its county seat is Gate City. Two centuries on, Scott County is best known not for its general but for a family that grew up in one of its valleys and reshaped American music.
