A Viking skipper once claimed the run from Hedeby to Kaupang — the trading town in Schleswig to the trading site on the Oslofjord — took him five days and five nights. Sagas are full of numbers like that, and there is no obvious way to check them. In the summer of 1972 a crew from the island of Als checked. They sailed the route in a hand-built replica of an eleventh-century warship and covered it in 114 hours, six hours inside the boast. The ship was Sebbe Als, and she had been in the water only three years.
