Melting snow turned the black earth of eastern Ukraine into a bog that swallowed boots, wheels, and timetables alike, and it was into this quagmire that Marshal Semyon Timoshenko sent hundreds of thousands of men. Stalin was convinced the Germans were finished, that one more push would shatter them. His generals were not so sure. What happened over sixteen days in May, in the fields and ravines southeast of Kharkov, would prove them right in the cruelest way imaginable.
