For some ten thousand years they had walked the open plains of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, tall hunters draped in guanaco hide, following the herds across the grass at the bottom of the world. Within a single human lifetime, between roughly 1880 and 1910, settlers, ranch hands, and hired killers reduced a nation of around four thousand to a few hundred. This is not a story of a people who vanished. It is the story of a people who were destroyed, deliberately, by name and by the dozen.
