The Old Tupi words behind the name Sergipe describe a river full of crabs, and crabs are still what arrives at the table when you sit down anywhere near the water in Aracaju, cracked open alongside a cold beer. Brazil's smallest state is 21,910 square kilometres of cane, coast and thorn scrub, wedged between Bahia and Alagoas with the São Francisco River drawn along its northern edge. Only the Federal District takes up less room on the map. Nothing else about the place is small.
