Saudade is the word other languages borrow because they have nothing to match it — the ache for something absent, braided with gratitude that it existed at all. A range of hills in central Minas Gerais carries the name. So does the town folded into them. When census takers came through in 2022 they counted 833 residents in Serra da Saudade, fewer than in any other municipality in Brazil. This is not a ghost town or a ruin, and no catastrophe emptied it. It is simply small, has been small for a long time, and shows no particular ambition to be anything else.
