      <description><![CDATA[Montsant translates from Catalan as "Holy Mountain," and the people who named it were not speaking loosely. Late in the twelfth century, in a hidden fold of these limestone cliffs, a shepherd is said to have dreamed of angels climbing a stairway into heaven. Monks of the Carthusian order took the vision as a sign. They built their charterhouse in the valley below and called it Scala Dei, the Stairway to God. Founded in 1194, it was the first Carthusian monastery on the Iberian Peninsula, and the mountain has worn its sanctity ever since.]]></description>
